Updated April 2026. Kelowna sits at the heart of the Okanagan Valley — Canada’s Napa Valley, with 200+ wineries, Okanagan Lake beaches, and sun-drenched summers that feel nothing like the rest of BC. Here’s how to explore it properly.

Why the Okanagan Valley?

The Okanagan Valley is unlike anywhere else in Canada — a semi-arid, sun-drenched region in the interior of BC where grape vines grow alongside orchards, the lake temperature reaches 24°C in summer, and the ski resort of Big White is 55km away. Kelowna (population 145,000) is the urban hub.

Okanagan at a glance:

  • 4 hours from Vancouver by car (395km via Highway 1 and the Coquihalla)
  • 200+ wineries, 40+ craft cideries
  • Okanagan Lake: 135km long, warm in summer (22–24°C)
  • Also known for: cherries, peaches, apples, cycling

Best Okanagan Wineries to Visit

The Okanagan has 5 sub-appellations. Kelowna is in the Central Okanagan — the heart of the valley. Top wineries near Kelowna:

Mission Hill Family Estate

The most iconic Okanagan winery — perched on a hill above Okanagan Lake with cathedral architecture, an outdoor amphitheatre, and some of BC’s finest wines. The grounds alone justify the visit.

Tasting fee: CAD $20–$35/person. Tours of the cave cellar: CAD $35–$50/person.

Quails’ Gate Estate Winery

Historic mission-era property producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that rival Burgundy. The Old Vines Restaurant on-site is one of BC’s best.

Tasting fee: CAD $20–$30/person. Restaurant mains: CAD $35–$55.

Summerhill Pyramid Winery

Certified organic winery with a pyramid-shaped cellar (actually used for aging wine). Known for exceptional sparkling wines and a beautiful terrace overlooking the lake.

Tasting fee: CAD $15–$25/person.

Cedar Creek Estate Winery

Exceptional Pinot Noir in a modern, architectural winery on the lakeshore. The Terrace restaurant has spectacular views.

Tasting fee: CAD $15–$25/person.

FAQ — Kelowna & Okanagan Wine Tours

How many wineries should I visit in one day? Three to four wineries is ideal for a full day — any more and the tastings start to blur together. Each visit typically takes 45–90 minutes including the tasting, a walk through the vineyard, and any meal or terrace time. Mission Hill, Quails’ Gate, and Cedar Creek form an excellent half-day circuit on the west side of Okanagan Lake.

When is the best time to visit Kelowna for wine? The grape harvest runs September to October — the most exciting time to visit wine country. Wineries are active, you can participate in harvest tours, and the valley’s fruit trees add to the atmosphere. Summer (July–August) is best for combining beaches with wine. Spring (May–June) is quieter and great for cycling the wine trail.

How much does a Kelowna wine tour cost? Self-guided visits with tasting fees at 3–4 wineries cost approximately CAD $60–$100/person. A half-day guided tour (3–4 wineries, transport) runs CAD $85–$120/person. Full-day tours with lunch included run CAD $130–$175. An e-bike wine tour for a self-guided day costs CAD $65–$90 for the bike rental, plus tasting fees.

Is the Okanagan good for non-wine drinkers? Yes — the Okanagan is also excellent for beaches (Okanagan Lake), hiking (Knox Mountain, Myra Canyon), cycling, and fruit. Orchards selling fresh peaches, cherries, and apples roadside in July–September are a uniquely Okanagan experience. Craft cideries (30+) offer excellent alternatives to wine, and several distilleries make exceptional BC spirits.

How do I get around the Okanagan wineries without a car? Book a guided tour — several operators run wine tours from Kelowna picking up from your hotel (CAD $85–$175/person). Alternatively, rent an e-bike (most wineries on the east Kelowna bench are accessible by bike, 5–15km from downtown). Taxis and rideshares are available for point-to-point winery visits but add up quickly.
