Updated April 2026. Charlevoix is Québec’s most scenic region — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve stretching from Baie-Saint-Paul to La Malbaie along the north shore of the St. Lawrence. Artists, gourmands, whale watchers, and skiers all find exactly what they’re looking for here.

Why Visit Charlevoix?

Charlevoix is formed by a 350-million-year-old meteorite crater — which shaped the dramatic landscape of rolling hills, deep river valleys, and towering cliffs over the St. Lawrence. The region has attracted artists since the 19th century and is now one of Québec’s top culinary destinations.

Charlevoix at a glance:

  • 2 hours from Québec City via Highway 138
  • UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1989
  • Known for: art, cheese, foie gras, whale watching, skiing, fall foliage
  • Best visited: May–October (summer), September (fall), December–March (skiing)

Top Things To Do in Charlevoix

1. Baie-Saint-Paul — The Art Capital

The town of Baie-Saint-Paul is the cultural heart of Charlevoix — over 20 art galleries, excellent restaurants, and a charming town centre with views of the valley and mountains.

Don’t miss:

  • Centre d’Art de Baie-Saint-Paul (CAD $10–$15)
  • Le Mouton Noir (local restaurant, excellent local cheese plates)
  • Saturday market (summer, free to visit)

2. Whale Watching from the Charlevoix Shore

The St. Lawrence narrows at Charlevoix, and whales come close to shore. Several operators run 2.5–3 hour tours from Baie-Sainte-Catherine (at the mouth of the Saguenay) and from La Malbaie.

Tour prices: CAD $75–$95/adult, CAD $45–$65/child.

The best combined option: whale watching from Charlevoix + continuation to Tadoussac (40 min further) — maximum whale exposure on one trip.

3. Le Massif de Charlevoix — Skiing + Cycling

Le Massif is Québec’s highest vertical drop ski resort (770m) — with the St. Lawrence as backdrop. In summer, the legendary Véloroute des Bleuets cycling trail passes through and the mountain runs hiking and mountain biking.

Ski lift tickets (2026): Adults CAD $75–$100/day.

The famous [train to the mountain from Québec City] (Le Massif train experience) is one of the most spectacular in Canada — the train runs along the St. Lawrence cliffs.

Train + ski package from Québec City: CAD $100–$160/person round trip.

4. Charlevoix Cheese Trail

Charlevoix is the birthplace of Québec’s artisan cheese movement. The region has 5+ fromageries producing world-class cheeses including Migneron de Charlevoix, Victor et Bertold, and Hercule de Charlevoix.

Cheese tour prices (self-guided): Free (buy cheese at each stop — budget CAD $30–$60 for tastings and purchases).

Guided gourmet tour: CAD $85–$120/person including transport, fromageries, and a foie gras producer.

5. La Malbaie and Manoir Richelieu

La Malbaie is the grand old resort town of Charlevoix — the Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu (built 1929) is one of Canada’s great historic hotels, with a casino, spa, and dramatic clifftop position over the St. Lawrence.

Staying at Manoir Richelieu: From CAD $250/night (worth it for the experience).

6. Saguenay Fjord National Park

Continue past Tadoussac into the Saguenay Fjord National Park for dramatic boat tours through Canada’s only fjord. Kayaking in the fjord is an unforgettable experience.

Fjord boat tours: CAD $55–$85/adult.

Day Trip from Québec City to Charlevoix

Charlevoix is an easy day trip from Québec City (2 hours by car) or 2–3 night getaway. The Route 138 coastal drive is one of Québec’s most beautiful roads.

Suggested route:

  1. Québec City → Baie-Saint-Paul (2h) — art galleries and lunch
  2. Baie-Saint-Paul → Baie-Sainte-Catherine (1h) — whale watching tour
  3. Baie-Sainte-Catherine → Tadoussac (free ferry, 5 min) — optional overnight

FAQ — Charlevoix Travel Guide

How far is Charlevoix from Québec City? Baie-Saint-Paul, the main town in Charlevoix, is 95 km (about 1.5–2 hours) from Québec City via Highway 138 along the north shore of the St. Lawrence. The drive itself is spectacular — coastal cliffs, river views, and charming villages. Intercar buses run from Québec City to Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie, but a car is strongly recommended to visit the farms, fromageries, and viewpoints between towns.

What is Charlevoix best known for? Charlevoix is best known for three things: its exceptional artisan food (cheese, foie gras, lamb, duck), its art scene (20+ galleries in Baie-Saint-Paul alone), and its whale watching (the St. Lawrence narrows here, bringing whales close to shore). It’s also home to Le Massif, Québec’s highest vertical drop ski resort, and the dramatic Saguenay Fjord nearby.

Is Charlevoix worth visiting in fall? Absolutely — fall (late September to mid-October) is arguably the best season. The valley of Baie-Saint-Paul turns spectacular shades of red and gold, the food and wine harvest is in full swing (fromageries, apple orchards, and vineyards), and the whale watching season is still running. There are fewer crowds than summer and accommodation is easier to find at 20–30% lower rates.

Can you visit Charlevoix and Tadoussac in one day from Québec City? It’s possible but rushed — Charlevoix to Tadoussac is 2.5 hours from Québec City. A better plan is to stop in Baie-Saint-Paul for lunch (1.5h from QC), then continue to Baie-Sainte-Catherine for an afternoon whale watching tour (40 min), and take the free ferry to Tadoussac for the night before returning the next day. Two days makes for a far more comfortable trip.

What is the best restaurant in Charlevoix? Chez Boulay in Baie-Saint-Paul is widely considered the best in the region — boreal cuisine using exclusively local ingredients. La Maison d’Affinage Maurice Dufour (La Malbaie) is essential for cheese lovers. Le Saint-Pub in Baie-Saint-Paul has excellent local microbrews and casual food. For a special occasion, the dining room at Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu (La Malbaie) has spectacular views and excellent regional cuisine.
